NORTH OF THAILAND

Northern Thailand - a place of ‘picture postcard’ beauty and wonder… Blessed with some of the best scenery in the kingdom, the north is a region of forests and mountains, and rivers and waterfalls, often set against a backdrop of swirling mists and fog. Living amongst this scenic splendour are Thailand’s hill tribes – peoples whose conventions and customs differ from mainstream Thai culture and whose ways of life have altered little in generations. Many of Thailand’s superior handicrafts are produced by northern hill tribes, making this an excellent place to pick up authentic gifts, keepsakes and souvenirs of your journey. The north is also a region of adventure. Rafting on rapids, mountain treks, mountain biking and even elephant safaris make exploring the region as exhilarating as it is fascinating.

The north of Thailand is also a place steeped in history and culture. Home to Yonok and Lanna Kingdoms, the north is awash with temples, museums, historical sites and artefacts that testify to the region’s historical significance. But the north is equally placed in the modern world – Chiang Mai (the region’s focal point for tourism) is a modern city with clubs and pubs and entertainment befitting any major city.

Northern Thailand - a world within a world and one you will not easily forget!

CENTRAL OF THAILAND

Central Thailand is the heart of the kingdom both geographically and administratively. The central region is made up of fertile flatlands providing Thailand with most of its agricultural produce. It is a place of natural beauty – of mountains, forests, waterfalls and rivers, yet it is also home to Bangkok – the seat of Thai government and some of the most important cultural and historical sites in the kingdom. The influence of key civilizations can be clearly seen in the central region – the Khmers established themselves here and the mighty Ayutthaya Empire certainly left its mark. As a result the region offers a diverse range of ancient art and architecture of national and international significance.
For the visitor, the central region experience is complete - Cha-am and Hua Hin are both beach locations within easy reach of Bangkok, while north of the capital Ayutthaya has every manner of cultural and historical site a visitor could wish to see. The region’s National Parks meet every possible need of the adventurer or eco-tourist. A visit to this region is almost inevitable – make the most of it while you are here!

NORTHEAST OF THAILAND

Known locally as ‘Issan’ (an adaptation of the English word ‘eastern’), the Northeast of Thailand is the country’s largest region and a place visitors tend to explore less than other regions. Essentially a series of flat plains with the Phu Pan mountain ranges running down their middle, the northeast has been influenced by a number of ancient civilizations (including the Khmers), all of which left their ruins, their historical sites and their artefacts (most of which are now housed in the area’s numerous museums).
The region is also home to traditional culture and ways of life that exist around specific crafts and trades. The region produces world renowned silk and handicrafts which make exquisite gifts or souvenirs. It is also a place of natural beauty and a very spicy interpretation of Thai cuisine! But most of all it is a region of community; few places in Thailand have Issan’s community feel and even a short visit reveals how friendly north-eastern people are.

The northeast is a diverse region with a lot to offer the visitor – not least sites showing some of the most important dinosaur fossils in this part of the world. You should seriously consider a visit to Issan if you have the opportunity – it will be well worth the effort.

EAST OF THAILAND

Eastern Thailand is made up of plains and hilly regions, the Chantaburi mountain range forming a natural demarcation line between Thailand and Cambodia. The region’s climate makes it an ideal place to grow tropical fruits - rambutans, durians, mangosteens and pineapples all in abundance. Home to Pattaya, eastern Thailand is one of the kingdom’s principal tourist destinations. Sea, sand, diving, snorkeling, fine hotels, excellent restaurants – this part of the region offers visitors a well rounded experience with virtually everything you might wish or want for.

The region is also renowned for pristine islands which litter the coastline and provide an ideal paradise setting for visitors to enjoy. Within easy reach of the capital, a trip to Thailand’s eastern provinces will certainly be worth your effort!
